Two original Goa Dj’s!
Goa Gil, and Anders from Anjuna, the writer of this article, later known as MissingInka
As a curiosity, the two of us arrived in Goa, same time, February 1970. But Gil went to the north, and my first years, I stayed on Colva beach, in the south. But I did go to visit north Goa, and with time, I found, in Colva new faces every year, while in the north, same people came back season after season, so in 1972, I moved north, staying at a house in Chapora.
The first party I remember, was on the parking lot, by the Tourist hotel, in Calangute, with a cassetteplayer supplying the music, probaly 1971. Soon the parties got more organised, I became friend with Karl, from New York, who had brought an electric generator, and he also had some equipment, and we made some parties on the middle beach, Anjuna. Our “major” Alan, decided to build a stage, at the end of South Anjuna beach, so we could organise live music, and this is where I became friends with Gil. https://youtu.be/TYQbiqrBNh8 When the live music got better organised, a place for rehearsing, and storing the equipment became a necesity, and Gil rented the “Music House”, that was the same house I had lived in, before, in Chapora.
Every fullmoon, the band played on the stage, New Year, was the big event, and in the Music house, we also had some fantastic events, with both live and recorded music.
In 1977, I began Dj’ing all night long, at the Rosegarden restaurent, next to the football field in Anjuna. Before, Dj’s were basically filling in between live music, and this was the first time, recorded music, all night long. I remember a German disco owner, who came up to me in the morning, and said, “I came for a beer, and I’m still here and the sun is rising !“ “Playing music like this, can make live music a thing of the past.” It didn’t go that far, but many events now, are based on recorded music. And the year after, I introduced Gorgio Moroder produced disco, at an outdoor party in Chapora Fort. Many of my friends were not so happy, but the live music also continued. Gil, together with Michael and Yaya, with Franny on the vocals, created a band called Nebula, and the peak, was a live concert in Rang Bhavan, in Bombay, two consequtive days. https://youtu.be/Tr5G50-N0nU
Later, with Michael and Yaya, we made a band, 7 Incas in the Backyard, and thats when I took the name Missing Inka, since I was always on the move. https://youtu.be/bA4oLH26rC0
I continued to Dj, and more and more centered on electronic music, a lot german, like Kraftwerk, and a sensational group, Neu, https://youtu.be/zndpi8tNZyQ?si=45A0q7b5FPu4EBCr but also disco. At this time, I also brought a “black light” that I had found, a bulb, that made white clothing stand out, and we made a “White party” where obviously everyone came dressed in white. In this time, Italian Paulino, and Swiss Rudy brought new music, like Yello, and it made the sceen more psychedlic. By then, we could by fluoro neon lights, and pigments for painting, in the local market town, that helped a lot with making the party area more psychedelic. Gil, played together with Rudy, and that was when he became “Goa Gil” , Rudy found some very good new style music, and another swiss guy, Andy, also brought new different styles of music, and it slowly became “Trance”, Around this time, a french guy, Laurent, also began playing, and he became the most legendary Goa Dj. By now, Gil and I were neighbours, and we interchanged a lot of music, one action that we shared with others, and helped make trance popular, with the variety it brought.
Here is a docu, “Technomania”,made by Danish Frants, about the sceen then, with interview of Gil.

We also had a spiritual journey, Gil entering the world of Hinduism, with it’s rituals, we met variuos times at the Kumbha Mela, the most important hindhu festival, here he is at his Duni, (hindhu sacred fire) behind his house in Anjuna,
and I ended up more in the nature, taking care of a biological diversity reserve close to where I live now.
Here is another docu from some time later, “The Last Hippie Standing” https://youtu.be/-dBOKtuJyWY?si=47XkNLEakPHzataw that also have a lot of involvment by Goa Gil !
Gil was also playing the Djembe, backing Ariane, his life companion, also on djembe, and they supply the drumtrack, in the beginning of the video “Fleamarkets” , that you can find here; https://goabeatz.com/goa-v-o-d/ pay/view, 1,50 euros/view
Later, we slowly choose different paths, I stayed with Trance, a lot progressive nordic style, and Gil began to play faster bpm’s, and built up a global following, so he went on a yearly tour, to different places where he had a crowd following, to play. Here at Dr.Hoffman’s birthday party, probably the most iconic pic of him!
I moved to Spain, and played some of the biggest festivals, the Boom, organised by friends of mine. https://youtu.be/qZS7engyf0c and Antaris, the two most well known. https://youtu.be/CRHZW95xoVc
Gil came here a few years ago, to play, by then he reached 210 bpm night time, when he played parties, he was the only dj, and sometimes played 48 hours non stop. In this picture, you see Ariane, bottom left, 2 friends, and Andy, who organises Atman festival, the last main festival I played at, first in Sri Lanka, https://youtu.be/O-FGYsoYspM , and last year in Portugal. https://youtu.be/QVhJ2p9CeTg
Next to him, Teresa, the mother of our daughter, and behind, Missing Inka, Goa Gil, and a Baba.
Gil, left us in 2023, and I live lowkey, in northen Spain. Here, I organised and played at many local parties, and now, there is a sceen, with good music criteria, many good Dj’s, and a fun crowd !
Some years ago, I began playing my historical cassette mixes, on http://diceradio.gr/ every sunday, 11:00 european time. Also on this station plays an old friend and my resident Dj, at the Big House in Anjuna, Stefano, aka Hanuman Dj, who introduced me to http://diceradio.gr/
